What should I know about Foster Parenting?
The goal for most children in foster care is to be reunited with their birth parent(s). Foster parents work with birth parents to achieve reunification. The length of time a child is in foster care depends on many factors. It could be for a few days, months, or much longer. It is important to note that medical, dental, and vision are covered for children in foster care by Nebraska Medicaid. Foster parents who work outside of the home will qualify for daycare assistance. All foster parents receive a monthly stipend to assist in meeting the needs of the youth placed in their care.

Our most successful foster parents are open-minded, dependable, patient and willing to try different parenting styles for children with different needs. Having a flexible schedule, being tolerant and demonstrating the ability to work as a member of our team are all important qualities for success.
Requirements to Become a Foster Parent:

Must be at least 21 years old.

Pass background clearances.

Be in good physical and mental health.

May be married, single, divorced, or domestic partnership.

Must have sufficient income to meet current expenses.

Have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license.

Own or rent a residence that meets Nebraska regulations for foster home licensing.

Have adequate space in the home for children.

Must be willing to attend Foster Parent training classes online or in person.
Process:
The process to become a foster parent involves a minimum of two visits to your home over a 10 to 12 week period. During those visits, BHS staff gather paperwork, interview all family members, inspect the home for safety, and fully explain the responsibilities of foster parenting. Our mutual screening process helps both sides determine if foster parenting is right for you and your family, we will discuss the characteristics of children that will best fit with your family’s lifestyle and ability.
