Maybe All She Needs Is A Family

  • On any give day, there are 500,000 children in the foster care system in the U.S.

  • There were a total of 10,140 children in out-of-home care in Nebraska in 2003.

  • About 2/3 of children in foster care had parents who abused drugs and/or alcohol.

  • Twelve Nebraska children died as a result of child abuse and/or homicide in 2003.

  • In Nebraska, a child can be placed in out-of-home care for a number of reasons, ranging from abuse or neglectful parental behavior, to their own delinquent behavior.

Family Builders seeks adults who can provide

a structured environment along with the nurturing and

emotional support all youth need..

You can choose from either short-term or long-term foster parenting.

Even as little as one weekend a month.

We provide extensive training, 24- hour on-call support,

weekly in-home consultation and a generous financial compensation.

Should I Become a Foster Parent?

YES, Because:

  • I enjoy being around children.

  • I have the time and energy to devote to working through behavior challenges of children.

  • I want to contribute to the life of a special needs child/youth.

  • I enjoy teamwork and working with other people.

  • I am naturally optimistic and embrace the many challenges of life.


Requirements for Potential Family Builders Foster Parents

  • Must be 21 years of age

  • In good physical and emotional health

  • No criminal history

  • No history of child abuse/neglect

  • No current drug/alcohol problems

  • May be married or single (no live-ins or roommates)

  • Possess good parenting skills

  • Creative and flexible

  • Must be able to make a commitment to the youth placed in your home

  • Must attend pre-service training (41 hours)

  • Willing to complete psychological testing, if necessary (including drug and alcohol evaluations)


Reasons for denial in becoming Family Builders Foster Parents

  • Unfavorable results of police, central registry and sexual offenders background checks

  • Suicide attempt within the past 5 years

  • Drug/Alcohol problem within past 5 years

  • History of spousal abuse

  • Current health problem effecting parenting ability

  • Applicants disagree with Family Builders foster care program philosophy

  • Refusal to sign release forms, contract and integrity statement

  • Unable to acquire at least 3 positive non-related references (additional references may be requested)

  • Applicant's home does not meet licensing requirements

  • Incomplete application materials (self-study guides, home study, etc.)

  • Other reasons determined by program staff.
